Will a Stump Grow Back After Using a Stump Removal or Stump Grinding Service?

People often ask us how permanent our tree stump removal service is. In other words, will it completely prevent the stump from regrowing in the future?

While stump grinding takes away those parts of a tree you can see, leaving behind a combination of wood chips and soil, the roots could still be intact underground. And some tree species may regenerate from these, so that fresh shoots grow back after stump grinding, often metres away. Given enough time, the sprouts could even grow into new trees. So, while regrowth is not likely, it is possible.

What affects Potential Tree Regrowth?

A number of factors come into play, but mostly the species of the tree. Some species, such as maples, elms, and willows, have robust root systems which potentially can grow back but generally not after the stump has been ground out. They require the larger root system to regenerate and so once the main root ball/stump is removed the severed smaller roots will die. Oak and poplar trees are also known for their strong regenerative abilities. Others, notably firs, spruces, and pines, cannot regenerate from their roots.

Equally, if roots are strong and healthy, it is more likely that new shoots will develop. However, this doesn’t typically happen if roots were diseased (honey fungus) or damaged pre-removal.

Depth of grinding is another factor. Where the process has been shallow, you will find more of the roots have been left intact, increasing the chances of regrowth. The deeper the grinding, the more of the root system will be removed, minimising the potential for new growth.

Finally, if the stump is in moist, nutrient-rich soil, this can regenerate fresh shoots. This will be a lot less likely if the ground is dry, or if the soil quality is poor or compacted.

How can I Prevent a Tree Growing back after Stump Grinding?

The best thing you can do for effective stump removal is to get a Professional Tree Stump Removal Specialist to grind the stump thoroughly, as far below ground level as possible through the base of the root ball. Doing this significantly lowers the chances of regrowth via the roots which remain, so that in effect you prevent the tree from growing back. And the professionals will have the best equipment and expertise for optimal results.

If you grind to only a few inches below ground level, for example, you will only take part in the root system which could result in new growth.
